More Britons than ever are going alcohol-free this Christmas

It’s not just the designated drivers – more Brits than ever are expected to go alcohol-free, at least some of the time, this Christmas. Whether it’s to swerve the crippling hangover, to drop a few calories or simply to maintain an abstemious lifestyle into the new year, the nation’s drinking habits are changing.

Passing on alcohol is no longer just for "dry January". According to Drinkaware, one in five adults in the UK are completely teetotal and that number is expected to rise in 2023.

Those of us who haven’t given up completely are cutting down. A survey by Schweppes found that nearly a third of under-40s describe themselves as moderate drinkers, opting to flit between alcoholic, low ABV and alcohol-free drinks depending on the occasion.

If you’re feeling “sober curious” as the festive season gets into full swing, the good news is you don’t have to make any compromises on flavour. The low- and no-alcohol market is one of the most innovative in the drinks world and it’s growing rapidly – new products promising great taste without the booze hit the shelves daily.

So, if you or your guests this Christmas are taking a “flexitarian” approach to drinking, or are cutting out the booze completely, there’s no reason for your glass to be empty.
